Beyond the Table: Celebrate National Nutrition Month®

National Nutrition Month® is a time to focus on making informed food choices and developing healthy eating habits. Established in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the month of March has become a time to celebrate the power of good nutrition. This year’s theme, “Beyond the Table,” emphasizes the importance of nourishing our bodies for optimal health and well-being.

According to eatright.org, this year’s theme “addresses the farm-to-fork aspect of nutrition, from food production and distribution to navigating grocery stores and farmers markets — and even home food safety and storage practices. It also describes the various ways we eat — not only around a dinner table but also on the go, in schools and restaurants, at games and events. This theme also includes sustainability, for instance, decreasing food waste from school and work to home and beyond.”

Tips to help you reach “Beyond the Table”

  • Shop smart: When purchasing food from a store, use a grocery list and pay attention to sales. Stock up on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources. Don’t forget about pantry staples like beans, lentils, and frozen fruits and vegetables. Check with your local community center, food bank, or senior center for programs that offer access to affordable, healthy foods.
  • Embrace healthy convenience: Making healthy food choices may seem difficult at times, especially when eating away from home, but it doesn’t have to be. Many restaurants provide nutrition information right on the menu or online. Opt for lean protein, whole grains, and vegetables whenever possible.
  • Seek professional guidance: Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) are food and nutrition experts who can help you create a personalized plan for your specific needs.

Remember, National Nutrition Month® is not about perfection but about progress. Celebrate small wins, be kind to yourself, and enjoy the journey to a healthier, more vibrant you. By making these mindful changes, you’ll not only fuel your body for the present but also invest in a healthier, happier future!
